The Blue Whale in Loreto

01/05/2025

The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet and in all of history. And as happens every winter, it can be admired in the Sea of Cortez. In the Marine National Park area of the Bahía de Loreto, BCS, guided and certified sightings are conducted following official regulations. The blue whale is one of the longest-lived animals, and it often carries out its main biological functions in the Sea of Cortez. They generally travel alone, are not very social, and feed on krill—small crustaceans similar to shrimp.

Their global population is approximately 25,000 individuals, with a little over 1,400 in Mexican waters. Although sightings are not always easy, this year 20 blue whales were recorded in the Loreto area.
